Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga :
A Direct Lineage Practice

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a traditional system of yoga as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India, and rooted in the teachings of his teacher, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. This method is based on a precise synchronization of breath (ujjāyī), posture (āsana), and gaze (dṛṣṭi), forming a dynamic and structured practice that purifies the body and steadies the mind. Practiced consistently, it becomes a moving meditation that cultivates discipline, clarity, and inner transformation.

The practice follows a structured sequence of postures (āsana), synchronized with breath (vinyasa), creating a meditative flow that builds strength, flexibility, and inner clarity.

ASHTANGA VINYASA Workshop

This workshop offers a thoughtful and accessible introduction to the structure, rhythm, and deeper intention of the Primary Series in Ashtanga Yoga (Yoga Chikitsa, or “yoga therapy”). Together, we will explore how the sequence is designed to purify, strengthen, and bring balance to both body and mind.

We will take time to break down the foundational postures, understanding not only their physical alignment but also their energetic and internal effects. Particular attention will be given to the connection between breath (ujjayi), movement (vinyasa), and gaze (drishti), allowing participants to experience the practice as a moving meditation rather than a series of isolated poses.

The workshop will also introduce key principles that guide the practice, including steadiness (sthira), ease (sukha), and the cultivation of awareness through repetition and discipline. Modifications and variations will be offered to support different bodies and levels of experience, creating a safe and inclusive environment.

This session is suitable for complete beginners who are approaching Ashtanga for the first time, as well as for practitioners who wish to deepen and refine their understanding of the sequence, reconnect with its foundations, and bring greater clarity and intention to their practice.

About the Teacher

Dedicated ashtangi, Patrizia gives herself wholeheartedly to the traditional lineage of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. She has been studying with teachers certified by Guruji, honoring the authenticity and discipline of this living tradition.
Rooted in the philosophy and method of the Ashtanga lineage, Patrizia’s practice is grounded in devotion, consistency, and respect for the teacher–student transmission that defines this path. The structure of the method, the rhythm of breath and movement, and the transformative power of the practice became the foundation of both her personal evolution and her teaching, also thanks to an injury on the ice that changed her practice on the mat.
Patrizia is the founder of Soham Yoga School, where she also trains future yoga teachers.

The Primary Series – Yoga Chikitsa

The first sequence of the Ashtanga Yoga system is known as the Primary Series, or Yoga Chikitsa—“yoga therapy.” It is a structured and progressive sequence designed to purify, align, and strengthen the body while cultivating stability of mind.

The series unfolds through a precise order of standing, seated, and finishing postures. Each posture prepares the next, creating a coherent and intelligent progression. Rather than approaching the practice as a collection of individual poses, the Primary Series is experienced as a continuous, flowing process that integrates body, breath, and awareness.

A central element of this practice is ujjayi breath—a steady, controlled breath performed through the nose with a gentle constriction at the back of the throat. This creates a soft, audible sound and establishes a consistent rhythm throughout the practice. The breath guides each movement, regulates the pace, builds internal heat, and anchors the mind in the present moment.

Equally important is drishti, the specific point of gaze assigned to each posture. Drishti helps to direct and steady the attention, reducing external distraction and supporting a more inward, meditative focus. Together, breath (prāṇa) and gaze create a framework through which the practice becomes not only physical, but deeply internal.

Beyond its physical effects, the Primary Series carries an inner meaning. Through repetition, discipline, and attentive practice, it invites a process of purification—not only of the body, but also of habitual patterns of the mind. The practitioner is gradually guided toward greater clarity, presence, and self-awareness. What may begin as a physical sequence evolves into a form of moving meditation, where effort and surrender are continuously balanced.
